She started her Bollywood career with a lead role in Qatil in 1988 and was one of the three female leads in the film Tridev  in the year 1989. She was began modelling at the age of 16. She went on to do many commercials including ads of Nirma and Pond's soap. She received her popular name "Bijli" from her modelling days. She represented India at the Miss Universe pageant in Seoul, South Korea where she won Best National Costume award designed by her mother Poonam Bijlani. She did a bilingual in Hindi & Kannada opposite Vishnu Vardhan. She was nominated by the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress category for Jurm opposite Vinod Khanna and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and scripted by Salim Khan.

Career

Sangeeta earned the title of Beauty Queen early in life, as she was crowned Queen of the School, then College Queen and then won Campa Princess, Bombay Harbor, Jaycees Queen and Eagle Queen. Sangeeta started her Bollywood debut in 1987 with Qatil, against Aditya Pancholi, before making blockbusters like Tridev, Hathyar, Jurm, Yodha, Yugandhar, Izzat and Lakshman Rekha. She was spotted by director Rajiv Rai during a fashion show that convinced her to join Bollywood. She has also made a bilingual Hindi and Kannada deal with the popular Southern star Vishnu Vardhan. Sangeeta made her screen debut with Chandni - "a story of power, revenge, and love" in early 1996 against actor Shahbaz Khan. She has also produced the popular comedy series Hasna Mat with Kader Khan in Star Plus on Zee TV. Sangeeta and Salman Khan started dating in 1986 when they were both modeling and their relationship lasted 10 years. They eventually separated. On November 14, 1996, Sangeeta married the cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin at the Taj Mahal Hotel, in the presence of the Bollywood fraternity and cricket in Mumbai.
