Kapadia once said that she had always aspired to become an actress when she was a child, saying she was "crazy about film". She was introduced by Raj Kapoor in her 1973 teenage novel, Bobby. While the film was to be the lead role for Kapoor's son, Rishi Kapoor, Kapadia was given the title role of Bobby Braganza, a middle-class Christian Goan . The story follows how Bobby falls in love with Raj (Rishi), the son of a wealthy businessman, and how the two men face the disapproval of their parents. Bobby was a major and critical success, and Kapadia was praised for her performance, which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress
She co-starred in Farhan Akhtar's first film, Dil Chahta Hai (2001). Representing the daily life of young Indians, it takes place in the modern city of Bombay and focuses on a major transition period in the lives of three young friends (Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna). Kapadia played the role of Tara Jaiswal, a middle-aged alcoholic woman, a professional interior designer and a divorced woman who is not allowed to meet her daughter.
The only Kapadia film in 2011 was Patiala House by Nikhil Advani. The role was minimal, Nikhat Kazmi, Times of India, said it "ends up being a bit underused."In December 2011, Kapadia is scheduled to appear in her third non-Hindi film and first Malayalam-language film, Bombay Mittayi, for which she began to learn the language. Her main film, What the Fish, was released on December 13, 2013. In 2014, she starred in the English-language film Finding Fanny and her latest and recent release was the 2015 Welcome Back movie.
