Padukone was born on January 5, 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark, of parents speaking konkani. His father, Prakash Padukone, is a former world-renowned badminton player and his mother, Ujjala, is a travel agency . Her youngest sister, Anisha, is a golfer. Her paternal grandfather, Ramesh, was secretary of the Mysore Badminton Association. The family moved to Bangalore, India, at the age of one year. She was educated at Sophia High School in Bangalore and completed her pre-university education at Mount Carmel College. She then enrolled at the Indira Gandhi National Open University for a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, but then left her due to scheduling conflicts with her modeling career.
Padukone announced in 2006 that she would make her film debut with Aishwarya, a Kannada film directed by Indrajit Lankesh. The romantic comedy was a remake of the film Telugu Manmadhudu, and she was starring in the title role opposite actor Upendra. The film proved to be a major commercial success. RG Vijayasarathy, of Rediff.com, appreciated Padukone's presence on screen, but added "that she has to work on her emotional scenes".
In 2018, Padukone portrays Rani Padmavati, a Rajput queen who commits jauhar (self-immolation) to protect himself from the Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji, in the Padmaavat period drama; he marked his third collaboration with Bhansali and Singh. She was challenged by the need to convey the courage of her character through silence and considered her the most emotionally draining part of her career.She read history books about the time and studied the various historical representations of Padmavati. Right-wing Hindu groups speculated that the film portrayed a romantic connection between Padmavati and Khilji; they protested violently and placed a premium to decapitate Padukone and Bhansali. HuffPost's Ankur Pathak also took note of the film's regressive theme but thought that Padukone had played his part with "understated elegance".
