She started modeling and playing at the age of 18. She was Miss Bombay and modeled for several brands, which allowed her to discover Basu Chatterjee. His first film, however, came after the wedding - his debut was in Raja Kaka (1974) in front of Kiran Kumar. However, celebrity came to him thanks to Rajnigandha (1974), a low budget and alternative film, directed by his mentor Basu Chatterjee. The film, despite having none of the features of a typical Bollywood blockbuster, was a major box office success. This was followed by many other low-budget films like Choti Si Baat (1975) and, later, by larger and larger-budget Bollywood productions like Pati Patni Aur Woh (1977).
