In 2003, Vidya was signed on by Goutam Halder for his independent Bengali drama Bhalo Theko: his first film release. Her portrayal of Anandi, a young woman reminiscing about her past, Anandalok Purashkar for Best Actress. Vidya made her Hindi movie debut in 2005 with Pradeep Sarkar's musical drama Parineeta. Before being cast, she had to undergo extensive auditions for six months. The film, an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel of the same name, narrated the love story of an idealist Lalita (Vidya) and a Shekhar musician (Saif Ali Khan), the son of a capitalist businessman. Her performance in the film was praised by Derek Elley from Variety wrote, "An acting revelation is Tamil newcomer [Vidya] Balan, whose devoted goal is dignified Lalita is the picture's heart and soul." Parineeta fetched her Best Female Debut Award and a nomination for Best Actress at the annual Filmfare Awards ceremony. Later in 2017, Vidya played Sulu, a spirited housewife who has a relationship in the comedy-drama Tumhari Sulu. She was identified with her character and was challenged by the opportunity to play a rare comic part. She drew on her experience of radio broadcasting in Lage Raho Munna Bhai and listened to late-night talk shows.Writing for the Times of India, Neil Soans commended Vidya for "infusing Sulu with an abundance of infectious optimism without being aggravating", and Shubhra Gupta of the Indian Express "her distinctive voice and full-bellied laughter" invest Sulu with real Warmth "With earnings of over 500 million we have ₹ 200 million budget, Tumhari Sulu proved to be Vidya's first commercial success since Kahaani.NDTV listed as one of the most popular films in the world, and a fifth film award and a fourth film award for best actress.

She was a pillar of support to NTR : Vidya Balan Bollywood actress Vidya Balan, who debuted in Telugu with the 'NTR' biopic, said NT Rama Rao and Nandamuri Basavatarakam shared a beautiful connection. Vidya also celebrates her New Year's birthday and had a friendly chat with the media. "I thought NTR was a perfect start for me and when I talked to Balakrishna about the film, I immediately agreed to do it, and I'm really lucky to be part of this prestigious biopic," said Vidya. When asked about Nandamuri Basavatarakam's role, Vidya replied that she was a strong woman and a pillar of NTR support throughout her highs and lows. She added that director Krish had made it easier for him on the set, as he was sending him dialogues on WhatsApp well before the shoot.
