Career

Lakshmi's modeling career begins at age 21. During her studies abroad in Madrid, she was discovered by an agent in a café. She said, "I was the first Indian model to make a career in Paris, Milan and New York, and I am the first to admit that I was new."  Lakshmi was able to pay her college loans by working as a model and actress. Lakshmi published a column in the New York Times and wrote articles on the style of the American edition of Vogue, commissioned by Anna Wintour. She also wrote a style column for Harper's Bazar (British and American editions), commissioned by editor Glenda Bailey. In 2009, Lakshmi played in the video of the song Eels "That Look You Give That Guy", interpreting the love interest of Mark Oliver Everett.
