She was born in Jodhpur and grew up in the state capital of Jaipur. She graduated from Maharani Girls College from there. She is married to Arun Bajpai, a merchant navy officer. His brothers Piyush Pandey and Prasoon Pandey advertise. Arun also has two sisters, Rama Pandey is a BBC reporter and a news reader DD and Tripti Pandeyis a cultural activist and tourism expert. She is the mother of Ishita Arun, also an actress.
Arun has sung many songs from Hindi films and some in the South Indian languages like Tamil and Telugu. Her most famous song to date has been Choli Ke Peeche sung with Alka Yagnik for the film Khalnayak with Madhuri Dixit, for which they won the Filmfare Award for Best Singer.She has produced several successful singles such as "Vote for Ghagra". She also sang the promotional song Halla Bol for the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League which became an instant hit. She is from Rajasthan and sings many songs from Rajasthan in all her albums and films.
Arun was seen for the first time in Lifeline (Jeevanrekha) a television series in Hindi about the lives of doctors, with Tanvi Azmi on Doordarshan. She delivered an electrifying performance in the 2008 hit Jodhaa Akbar as Maham Anga, Akbar's insightful nurse and political advisor. She has also played in supporting roles in such films as China Gate, Chingari, Well Abba, Welcome to Sajjanpur, West East and Ghatak.
