Vyjayanthimala is an Indian film actress, dancer of Bharathanatyam, carnatic singer, choreographer and parliamentarian. She made her debut in the Tamil-language film Vazhkai in 1949 and the Telugu film Jeevitham in 1950. She later became one of the most prominent actresses of South Indian cinema and the golden age of Bollywood. actress of all time. Vyjayanthimala was one of the biggest Bollywood stars with a career spanning nearly two decades. She was the first star to completely change the standard and style of dance in Indian cinema. |When the director, Mr. V. Raman, was looking for a new face to launch in Vazhkai of AVM Productions, he saw Vyjayanthimala playing Bharata Natyam in Gokhale Hall in Chennai.He tried to convince his grandmother, who feared that Vyjayanthimala would join the films because she thought it would hinder her education and dance. Vyjayanthimala played with a student by the name of Mohana Shivashankaralingam and played with high profile actors, S. V. Sahasranamam, S. Draupadi, T. R. Ramachandran and K. Sankarapani. The film was a great success and was remade in Telugu after a year as Jeevitham with a slightly different distribution, namely C. H. Narayana Rao, S. Varalakshmi and C. S. R. Anjaneyulu. This film was a great success when it was released.
In 1954, Vyjayanthimala starred in the film Nagin with Pradeep Kumar. The film received favorable public responses and became the most profitable film of 1954 where it was called blockbuster. His performance as leader of the Nagi tribe earned Mala favorable reviews, as in 1955 a Filmfare magazine critic stated that "Vyjayanthimala in the title role offers a laudable performance in addition to its beauty.
In 1968, Vyjayanthimala appeared in three big budget films with leading actors such as Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Rajendra Kumar. His first release of the year was Sunghursh, directed by Mere Mehboob (1963) under the direction of Harnam Singh Rawail. She co-starred with Dilip Kumar for the seventh and last time in her career, with Balraj Sahni and Sanjeev Kumar in key roles. Initially offered to actress Sadhana, the role later went to Vyjayanthimala while the first was suffering from her thyroid problem.
