Bharathiraja, one of the leading directors of Tamil cinema, was in the audience and was looking for a heroine to play in his new film. He met Rati's father and promised that the film would end in a month. Her father reluctantly agreed, and sixteen-year-old Rati was very excited about playing in her first film, Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979).
She has worked with big banners and South Indian movie stars. Previously, she had worked with director K. Balachander and had been the main lady of Kamal Hassan in many Indian films. She was not surprised when she approached him for the Hindi remake of their Telugu blockbuster (1979). Renamed Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981), the film tells the story of passionate lovers torn apart by their parents in the narrative tradition of Romeo and Juliet.
It became one of the most popular hits of 1981 and marked the beginning of the Hindi cinema of five stars of the film industry in India: director K. Balachander, hero Kamal Hassan, heroine Rati Agnihotri, singer S. Balasubrahmanyam and actress Madhavi. She then starred in more than 43 Hindi films.
