He  is an Indian film actor, dancer, playback singer and philanthropist who works predominantly in Tamil cinema and also appeared in other Indian languages films. Referred to by fans and media as "Thalapathy" (commander), Vijay is the highest paid actor in Tamil cinema and is also considered as one of the most bankable stars in the Indian film industry.  He started his film career as a child actor in the film Vetri in 1984 . He presented golden rings to the newborn babies at the Egmore Government General Hospital.  He fasted several times as an agitation against the treatment of Sri Lankan Tamils by the Sri Lankan Government. He had participated in fasts organised by the South Indian Film Artistes Association (SIFFA) and by the technicians of Tamil film industry before conducting his own eight-hour fast on 16 November 2008.  His fans also observed fast at various places in the state, including Tirunelveli, Tiruchirapalli, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Erode, Vellore and Dharmapuri districts. Vijay Education Awards were conducted at JS Kalyana Mandapam in Chennai on 8 July 2012 by his Vijay Makkal Iyakkam organisation to honour the students who topped in 2012 SSLC and 12th board exams and the awards were distributed by Vijay.
