Bollywood Hungama film critic Taran Adarsh found Dhawan "a talent you can not help but marvel" and Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN added, "It's Varun Dhawan who stands out for its confident charm and vulnerable scenes with ease ". Student of the Year was a success, with gross revenue of 970 million worldwide.
In 2014, Dhawan had two film releases. His first appearance was in the comedy Main Tera Hero , a remake of the Telugu film Kandireega, which was produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and directed by his father. He plays the leading role of Sreenath "Seenu" Prasad, an impetuous brat, in love with the character of Ileana D'Cruz but seduced by the character played by Nargis Fakhri. Filmfare's Raedita Tandon congratulated Dhawan for his comic timing and compared it favorably to Govinda and Prabhudheva. Dhawan then played Rakesh "Humpty Sharma", a Punjabi boy who engages in a romantic relationship with a committed woman, in Shashank Khaitan's romantic comedy, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. With Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Shukla, the film was described as a tribute to Dilwale Dulhania's The Jayenge by Johar, who was a producer. India Today's Rohit Khilnani praised Dhawan's presence on screen, and Mint's Nandini Ramnath noted how much he stood out in the "quieter scenes" of the file.
