Mohanlal Viswanathan (born May 21, 1960), known as Mohanlal, is an Indian actor, producer, and performer who works mainly in the Malayalam cinema. He had a prolific career for four decades, during which time he played in more than 300 films. In addition to Malayalam, he has also appeared in other regional Indian films.

Mohanlal made his teenage debut in the Malayalam Thiranottam film in 1978, but the film was delayed in his release for 25 years due to censorship issues. His screen debut was in the 1980 Manjil Virinja Pookkal love film, in which he played the villain.

In the following years, he played antagonistic characters in several films and gradually rose to supporting roles. In the mid-1980s, he emerged as a leading actor and gained fame after playing in a commercially successful series of films in 1986; the crime drama Rajavinte Makan, released that year, heightened his celebrity.

  • He is an Indian actor, producer, playback singer, distributor and philanthropist who predominantly works in Malayalam cinema besides also having sporadically appeared in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi language films. One of the most admired Indian actors.

Career

Mohanlal prefers to work in Malayalam films, but has also appeared in some Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. Some of his best-known non-Malayalam films include the Tamil political drama Iruvar (1997), the Hindi Crime Theater Company (2002) and the Telugu Action Movie Janatha Garage (2016).

Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the village of Elanthoor in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, on May 21, 1960. He is the youngest child of Viswanathan Nair, a former government official and secretary of Kerala, and Santhakumari.

He had an older brother named Pyarelal (died in 2000, during a military exercise). Mohanlal grew up in Mudavanmugal in his father's house in Thiruvananthapuram. He studied at Model Boys High School in Thiruvananthapuram and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram. Mohanlal's first role was in grade six for a play called Computer Boy, in which he played a ninety-year-old man.

In 1980, Mohanlal played the leading role of antagonist in Manjil Virinja Pookkal - Fazil's first film.

The film has become a major success. Mohanlal's friends had applied in response to an advertisement published by Navodaya Studio. He auditioned for the role before a panel that included professional directors. Upset by his appearance, two of them gave him bad grades, but Fazil and Jijo Appachan gave him 90 and 95 points out of 100.
