Ashish Vidyarthi is an Indian film actor who works in multi-language films, mainly in Bollywood, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Bengali, English, Odia and Marathi cinemas. He is noted for his antagonistic characters. In 1995, he received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Drohkaal. He is the son-in-law of Shakuntala Barua. He was born in Kannur, India, of Reba Vidyarthi, a Kathak dancer of Bengali origin, and Govind Vidyarthi, a Malayali theater personality from Thalassery, Kannur. Ashish got his family name from his father, who took the family name "Vidyarthi" in tribute to freedom fighter Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi who died in the Kanpur riots. He moved to Delhi in 1969 and joined Mehta Vidyalaya of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, where he won acclaim for his performances as an actor in dramatic and comic roles. He attended Hindu College and earned a BA in history. |

Ashish Vidyarthi had a presence in the theater circuit, but he was first noticed by the television audience in the humorous Sai Paranjpye Hum Panchi series Ek Chawl Ke. He began to play minor roles in regional television series. He also played at Dastaan, where he was the antagonist. Vidyarthi's film career began with a supporting role in the Kannada Film Anand. Later, he played with Suresh Gopi in Hijack. His break in Hindi films came with Naajayaz and Baazi. |
