Abhay Deol (also known as Abhay Singh Deol, born March 15, 1976) is an Indian actor and producer, who works mainly in Hindi language films. Born into the influential Deol family of Hindi cinema, he began playing at a young age in the theater productions of his school. Deol debuted on screen in 2005 with Socha Na Tha, Imtiaz Ali's romantic comedy. His next film is Nanu ki Jaanu which is a love story written by Manurishi Chadha, directed by Faraz Haider and produced by Inbox Pictures. After the modest success of his debut, Deol received praise for his performances in such films as Manorama Six Feet Under (2007), which earned him the Best Actor Award at the Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008). |

His decisive role came in 2009 with Dev's lead role in Anurag Kashyap's Dev.Dan, a critical and commercial hit, a modern adaptation of the classic novel Bengali Devdas. With the success of the film, Deol gained wider recognition and further praise from movie critics. Youth Deol was born into a Sikh family in Ajit Singh Deol and Usha Deol. He is the nephew of the movie actor Dharmendra, and the cousin of Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol. Abhay Deol said in an interview with Rediff that he is acting not because of his father, but because he has been involved in theater since school. "At 18, I decided to take the plunge, it took me 10 years because I did not want to leave my education to get into the movies Deol made his film debut in Imtiaz Ali's 2005 Socha Na Tha, a romantic comedy in which he played against Ayesha Takia. The film garnered rather positive criticism from critics and was on average grosser at the box office than Deol's performance in the film was well received. Her second film role was Ahista Ahista in 2006. Deol's first release in 2007 was the multi-sport comedy drama Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd that emerged as a box office success. Deol had two other releases in the year, the detective film Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and the thriller Manorama Six Feet Under. The latter won the Best Film Award at the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York, and Deol won Best Actor. |
