Arunasalam Murugadoss, commonly known as AR Murugadoss, is an Indian director, producer and screenwriter. He is best known for his work in Tamil and tele-guided films and for re-enacting them in Hindi cinema. This includes Suriya-starrer Ghajini (2005) and Hindi remake Ghajini (2008) with Aamir Khan, with Vijay-starrer Thuppakki (2012) and Hindi remake Holiday (2014) with Akshay Kumar. His Tamil film of 2002 Ramanaa was redone in Hindi by director Krish as Gabbar Is Back (2015) with Akshay Kumar also. Murugadoss won the Filmfare Award for best director for his Tamil drama film Kaththi in 2014.

Private life

Murugados was born in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. The initials "AR", denoting the name of his father Arunasalam, were added after the signing of Murugados by his first film Dheena (2001). The Murugados currently reside in Virugambakkam, Chennai. Murugados was educated at the Higher Superior School of Government and studied the Bachelor's degree in Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirapalli. His brother Dileepan made his actor debut with Vathikuchi (2013).


Murugados with Aamir Khan During his collegiate days, Murugados was active in cultural events, especially in mimicry and drawing. He then became a movie lover by watching up to seven movies a week in his hometown and began to write jokes too. After Ananda Vikatan published them, Murugados began thinking about becoming a writer. At Bharathidasan University, he began writing sketch comedies and acted in them. After university, he tried to join the Madras Film Institute, but was rejected. Nevertheless, Murugados remained in Chennai in multiple functions. First, he became an assistant writer of P. Kalaimani and wrote dialogues for the Tamil film Madurai Meenakshi. He became deputy director of Ratchagan (1997) for half of the film and continued as assistant script director for the film Telugu Kalusukundam Ra.Murugadoss then worked with S. J. Surya for the film Kushi.

S. J. Suryah recommended Murugados to Ajith Kumar for directing his first film, Dheena. His next films were Ramana, Ghajini and Stalin. His fifth film was Ghajini, which was a Hindi remake of his 2005 film and marked his debut in Bollywood. It was released on December 25, 2008 and became the first Bollywood film to exceed 100 crore. His next Tamil film 7aum Arivu, was broadcast on Diwali 2011 and had more success outside of India than in Tamil Nadu. Murugadoss signed an agreement with Fox Star Studios to produce two Tamil films.

In 2012 he directed thriller Thuppakki, featuring Vijay and produced by S. Dhanu released on Diwali 2012 to mostly positive reviews and was a huge commercial success in the Kolsey ₹ 100 crore club. He also directed the Hindi remake of the film, Holiday: A Soldier is never out of service. In 2014, he was a writer and producer for the fantastic film Maan Karate, with Sivakarthikeyan, directed by his former assistant Thirukumaran.

In 2014 he directed the action drama Kaththi with Vijay and produced by Ayngaran International released on Diwali 2014 and appeared as the second biggest of the year after Lingaa. In 2016, he directed Akira with Sonakshi Sinha. It is a remake of the Tamil film Mouna Guru. He now directs a Telugu film with Mahesh Babu and Rakul Preet Singh.
