Aditya Roy Kapur (pronounced 16 November 1985) is an Indian actor born in Naupada who works in Hindi films. After a short career as a VV on Channel V, he made his film debut with a minor role in London Dreams (2009) and followed him in supporting roles in Action Replayy (2010) and Guzaarish (2010). He gained prominence in 2013 by starring in the successful romantic drama Aashiqui 2 and a supporting role in the early career romance Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, both ranked among the best Bollywood films of the year.
First life and background
Aditya Roy Kapur was born in Mumbai on November 16, 1985 and lived in the United States for 10 years, to a Hindu father, Kumud Roy Kapur and an Indian Jewish mother, Salome Aaron. His grandfather, Raghupat Roy Kapur was a film producer Kapur is the youngest of three siblings, his older brother Siddharth Roy Kapur is the managing director of UTV Motion Pictures, who had married the actress Vidya Balan and her second. Elder brother Kunaal Roy Kapur is also an actor.
His maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruby Aaron, were qualified dance teachers, who introduced Sama dance to India. He was educated at G. D. Somani Memorial School, at Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, where all his siblings studied and where his mother directed plays . Subsequently, he graduated from St. Xavier's College, affiliated with the University of Mumbai.
Kapur is not a trained actor, although he has taken dance classes and diction classes to improve his Hindi accent. According to him, he "had no burning ambition to become an actor", and was content to be a VJ until he was called to audition for the London Dreams. During his school years, he wanted to be a cricketer but he dropped the cricket coaching classes after the sixth standard.
Beginnings of the film and initial struggle (2009-2010)
Kapur began his career as a VJ on the Channel V music channel, where his comical timing and "unique hosting style" earned him success. He made a "Pakao" show for the V channel. Later, he made his film debut in 2009 playing a minor role in the musical drama of Vipul Shah London Dreams alongside Salman Khan, Asin, Ajay Devgan. The film was not well received by critics, and failed at the box office.Kapur was later seen in the science-fiction comedy Action Replayy (2010) with Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai, also directed by Vipul Shah, which failed both critically and commercially. He then appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's bitter-sweet drama Guzaarish (2010) with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. The film has not had commercial success, but it has earned mixed reviews from positive critics.

Kapur's career reached a turning point in 2013, when he starred in the romantic drama of Mohit Suri Aashiqui 2 vis-à-vis Shraddha Kapoor. He was released as the sequel of Aashiqui of Mahesh Bhatt (1990). Both films were not related to plot and characters, but were similar and shared similar themes. The film garnered mixed reviews from positive critics, and Kapur received rave reviews for his performance as a declining singer fighting alcoholism. The film critic Anupama Chopra wrote that "Aditya gives a certain charm to Rahul's anguish, he is serious and broken." His on-screen alchemy with Kapoor was also appreciated. The film was commercially successful and became the eighth Bollywood film in 2013.
Her next role was in Ayan Mukerji's romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Kalki Koechlin. Kapur's performance earned him positive reviews and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film itself has received mixed reviews to positive reviews, and has become the fourth most profitable Bollywood film of 2013.
Kapur was later seen in front of Parineeti Chopra in the comedy Daawat-e-Ishq by Habib Faisal (2014). He then plays alongside Katrina Kaif in the romantic drama of Abhishek Kapoor, Fitoor, adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. None of these films did well at the box office.
In 2016, Kapur made an appearance in Gauri Shinde's film Dear Zindagi with Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan, released in November 2016. Towards the end of 2016, he finished filming Shaad's Ok Jaanu romance.
