Tabassum Fatima Hashmi (born 4 November 1971), known as Tabu, is an Indian actress. She has mainly performed in Hindi films and has also participated in films in English, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali. She has twice won the National Film Award for Best Actress and has received six Filmfare Awards, including a record four awards for Best Actress. She received the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2011
Tabu is best known for playing protagonists in films that garner a more critical appreciation than the box office figures. His most critically acclaimed performances are Maachis (1996), Kaalapaani (1996), Virasat (1997), Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Astitva (2000), Chandni Bar (2001), Maqbool (2003), Cheeni Kum (2007), Haider (2014), Drishyam (2015) and Fitoor (2016). She has also played lead and supporting roles in several commercial hit films, including Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Border (1997), Biwi No.1 (1999), Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), Fanaa (2006) ), Jai Ho (2014) and Golmaal Again (2017). Her international projects include a lead role in the drama The Namesake by Mira Nair (2007) and a supporting role in Ang Lee's highly successful adventure film Life of Pi (2012).
First life and background
Tabassum Fatima Hashmi was born from Jamal Hashmi and Rizwana to a Muslim family. [His parents divorced shortly after. Her mother was a teacher and her maternal grandparents were retired teachers who ran a school. His grandfather, Mohammed Ahsan, was a maths teacher, and his grandmother was a professor of English literature. She went to St. Anns High School in Hyderabad. Tabu moved to Mumbai in 1983 and studied at St. Xavier's College for two years.
She is the niece of Shabana Azmi and Baba Azmi and the youngest sister of actress Farah Naaz. She speaks Urdu, Telugu, Hindi and English
