Dr. Girija Shettar is a former actress of Indian origin of British origin, known for her work in films of South India. In 1989, Shettar played in the film of Maniratnam Geethanjali. She then made the film of Malayalam Vandanam, directed by Priyadarshan in which she played alongside Mohanlal.

In 1992, she signed for the lead role in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, whom she left halfway to complete a prior commitment. Ayesha Julka replaced her after the first timetable. In the same year, she starred in another Telugu Hrudayanjali film under the direction of A. Raghurami Reddy, who won four Nandi awards. The film was completed in 1992 but was only released in 2002.

Personal life 

Girija Shettar was born on July 20, 1969 in Orsett, Essex, a father doctor of Kannada and a British mother. From the age of 18, Girija was trained in Bharatanatyam. She completed her doctoral thesis in Integral Yoga Philosophy and Indian Spiritual Psychology at Cardiff University in 2003. She spent as much time as possible in Sri Aurobindo's ashram in Puducherry. Girija is currently a London-based writer. She previously worked for a newsletter about medical technologies, she now writes for a shipping magazine.  A haiku poetry booklet titled "This Year, Daffodils" was published by Survivors' Poetry and the Esmee Fairburn Foundation, 2011.

After the liberation of Geethanjali , it appeared on the first page of the 30 June 1989 issue of Screen (magazine) . In 2002, "Geethanjali" was one of five films presented at the British Film Institute during a retrospective of Mani Ratnam's work. The films were chosen as examples of strong heroin roles in Indian films.
